Bear in the Big Blue House sign Disney MGM Studios

This show premiered on July 4, 1999 and was presented several times a day in the home of the former Soundstage Restaurant.  Guests sat on the carpeted floor and watched trailers for Playhouse Disney shows such as "Rolie Polie Olie" as they waited for the show to begin.  The show ended August 4, 2001 and reopened in October of that same year with a new show featuring all of the Playhouse Disney characters.  Bear continued to play a part in the Playhouse Disney show but the Blue House set was smaller and not the same as what was used in this show.  Bear appeared in the revised Playhouse Disney shows until at least 2006 (when his show went off the air).  Bear also appeared in the Disney Stars and Motor Cars parade.

The Show
(All of the audio was prerecorded for Bear and his friends except for the live Cast Member assisting with the show.  The lines used in this script by the cast member are an approximation of what was used in each show.  There is also one small part where the audio that I have for this show drops out during one of Tutter's lines.  This is represented by ellipses.)

The show begins when an enthusiastic Cast Member asks the crowd if they watch Bear on the Disney Channel before asking them if they are ready to meet Bear and his friends.  The Cast Member then says Bear has been very busy and trying to catch up on his naptime but wants to be woken up once the audience has arrived.  The Cast Member then leads the audience in shouting “Hey, Bear!” to wake him up.  Bear can then be heard yawning faintly.  The crowd is encouraged shout even louder.  Bear is then heard yawning again.  After the third time, Bear finally wakes up and steps out on to the porch of the house.

Bear:  Hi everybody!  It's great to see you!  (Sings.) Welcome to the Blue House.

Tutter:  Hello from the small mouse.

Bear: Things to do.

Pip and Pop: Fun for you.

Bear: Howdy from the big bear.  Want some fun?

Pip and Pop:  Here's where.

Bear: Just for you.

Tutter:  All is new.

All:  In the house of blue.

Pip and Pop: Lots of room in our house.

Bear: Catch the moon at our house.

Tutter: Kitchen's here.

Pip and Pop: Bathroom's there.

Bear: Attic full of stuff here.

Ojo:  Pillows full of fluff here.

Treelo:  Whoop-ti-doo.

Ojo:  Just for you.

Ojo and Treelo:  In the house of blue.

All: Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Big Blue House.  Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Big Blue House.  Door is open.

Tutter:  Come on in!

Bear:  Now you're here!

All:  So let's (Treelo laughs.) begin!

Bear (Speaking):  It's great to see all of you here so up close and personal.  And I must say, you're looking pretty good.  Hey, wait a second.  (He sniffs.)  What's that smell?  (He sniffs some more).  Hmm?  Hey!  It's you!  (He sniffs deeply).  Ooo, you smell good.  You smell like-friends!  (Laughs.) But you know what a friend is, right?

Cast Member:  Sure!

TASCHEN

Bear:  A friend is someone who likes you just because you're you.

Cast Member:  A friend is someone you can have fun with.

Bear:  And a friend is someone who might send you some mail.

Ojo/Tutter/Pip/Pop:  Mail?  We love mail!

Bear (Sings):
What's in the mail today?
What's in the mail today?
What's in the mail today?
What's in the mail today?
(Speaks.)
Hmm, now what do we have today?  Oh boy!  Postcards!  I love postcards!  It's so much fun to hear from my friends.  And today, we're going to have a lot of fun with you, my newest friends.  Here in the Big Blue House.

Cast Member (looking at the postcard):  Oh wow.  Hey kids, look at this!  That's fantastic!  You've got some place here, Bear.

Bear:  The best thing about a home is that I feel so-at home!
(Sings.)
In the morning when I wake up, I stretch and shake my head.  It feels so great to be in my own bed.  Walk to the kitchen, make my special cup of tea and stop and think it's so nice to be, here in my home sweet home.  I'm sure that you'll agree.  That your home sweet home is the perfect place to be.  `Cause it's your home sweet home and everybody knows.  It's great to be at home.  Yeah it's great to be at home.

Tutter: Sure is!

Bear:  Yeah, it's great to be at home. Yeah, it's great to be at home. Home sweet home!  (Speaks.)  Another one of my favorite things about being at home is that I can dance as much as I want.  As a matter of fact, having all my old and new friends here in my very own house really makes me want to dance!  Do you like to dance?

Cast Member:  Oh, what's up Bear, you got a little itch?

Tutter:  Uh oh.  Bear's getting itchy!

Pip:  Yeah, he's itchin'.

Pop:  And twitchin'.

Bear:  Ooo, you're right.  I do have an itch.

Ojo:  And a scritch?

Bear (laughs):  And a scritch too.  Ooh, and you know what that means.

Cast Member:  We sure do, don't we?  Look out kids, `cause once Bear gets an itch and scritch to do some cha-cha-chaing, there's no stopping him.  (Demonstrates the Bear Cha-Cha-Cha).

Bear:  See?  They know it already.
(Sings.)
When I feel my toes start to twitch,
My lips go "La-La-La-La-La-La".
And my arms and legs
get the itch.
It's time to do the Bear
Cha-Cha-Cha!
Cha-Cha-Cha!
Ha-Cha-Cha!
Gonna Cha-Cha-Cha!
Ooh-La-La.
Time to Cha-Cha-Cha.
The Bear Cha-Cha-Cha!

Bear (Speaks):  Well don't just sit there; get up and do it with me!  Come on!

All:  Cha-Cha-Cha!

Bear:  Everyone!

All:  Gonna Cha-Cha-Cha!

Bear/Pip/Pop:  Ooh-la-la.

All: Time to Cha-Cha-cha.  The Bear Cha-Cha-Cha!

Pip and Pop:  Cha-Cha-Cha!

Bear:  Now you might notice some people stop and stare.

Pip:  Who?

Tutter:  What?

Pop:  Why?

Ojo:  How?

All:  Where?

Bear:  You can explain to them you're an honorary bear!

All:  Yeah!

Cast Member:  Everybody!

All:  Cha-Cha-Cha.

Bear:  Everyone!

All:  Gonna Cha-Cha-Cha.  Ooh-la-la.  Time to Cha-Cha-Cha.  The Bear Cha-Cha-Cha.

(Treelo laughs.)

Bear: Cha-Cha-Cha!  Ha-Cha-Cha.  Gonna Cha-Cha-Cha.  Ooh-la-la.  Time to Cha-Cha-Cha.  The Bear Cha-Cha-Cha.  The Bear Cha-Cha-Cha.

(Treelo keeps repeating Cha-Cha-Cha.)

Bear:  Cha-Cha-Cha!

Bear (Speaking):  It warms my big bear heart to see all my friends dancing and singing.

Cast Member:  We've got some great dancers Bear.

Bear:  You bet.  Like all of you here.  And then Ojo and Treelo and Pip and Pop.  And-Tutter?  Hey, where's Tutter?

Cast Member (Points to stage right): There's Tutter!  He's over here!

Bear:  Have you seen Tutter?

Cast Member:  He was just here a second ago.

Bear:  Hey, Tutter!

(They look and call for Tutter.)

Bear:  Well I've just got to find him.  We can't have as much fun without Tutter.

All:  Yeah.

Bear:  Wait right here.  I'll be right back. Tutter!  (He goes into the house to look for Tutter, who has been popping up all over the stage.  He finally pops out of the window box on the left side of the stage.)

Ojo (pointing to the window box):  Hey Pip and Pop.  Hey Treelo.  There's Tutter.

Pip:  Hey Tutter.  Whatcha you doing way over there?  You're missing all the movin'.

Pop:   Yeah and the groovin'.

Pip:  The dancin'.

Pop:  And the prancin'. (Laughs.)

Tutter:  Yeah well, I don't really feel much like uh, dancin' or prancin' right now.  I'll just sit here and watch you guys.  Ok?  Ok?

Ojo:  Tutter?  Are you being a little bit um, shy?

Tutter:  Shy!  Me?  Yeah, I guess I am a little.  I mean, I don't want to look silly in front of all these people.  I just did.

Ojo:  But we're all your friends.  Right everybody?  Right kids?

Pip and Pop:  Tutter, we won't make fun of you.  No matter how ridiculous you act.
(Sings/raps in the style of the Beastie Boys.)
Everybody play a game we're going to show you something cool.
We call it the Otter Dancing School.

Tutter:  But I'm kind of nervous, don't know if I can do it.

Pip and Pop:  Don't you worry Tutter there's really nothing to it!

Pip:  Just hold your head up so you feel real tall.

Pop:  Now bounce that head like a little rubber ball.

Pip:  Lean to one side.

Pop:  Now back to the other.

Pip:  Look at yourself.

Pip/Pop:  You're doin' the Otter!

Tutter:  This is so easy.  Can you teach me more?

Pip:  Well maybe.

Pop:  I guess.

Tutter:  Oh please!

Pip and Pop:  Oh yes!

Pip and Pop:  You've got the groove, you've got the beat.

Pip:  It's time to move those hands and feet.

Pip and Pop: Now wave your arms and bounce around.

Cast Member:  Look at you Tutter, you're getting down!

Tutter:  I'm dancing!

Pip and Pop:  He's dancing!

Tutter:  I'm dancing!

Pip and Pop:  We're dancing, go!

Tutter:  Yeah!

Pip and Pop:  Do the otter!

Tutter:  I'm doin' it!

Cast Member:  Do the Otter!

Tutter:  Hey everybody!  Look what I can do!  (He dances around.)  I can really get down!

Cast Member:  Of course you can Tutter.  Everyone can.  You just have to let yourself do it.

Bear:  Tutter!  I've been looking all over for you.

Tutter:  Oh, hey Bear!  Look what I can do!  (He dances.)

Bear:  Wow, that's great Tutter.

Pip:  C'mon Tutter.

Pop:  Time to practice.

Tutter:  Yeah, we're gonna go practice.  See ya later Bear.

Bear:  Well, ok.  See ya.  (To Cast Member.)  Isn't Tutter fun?

Cast Member:  He sure is Bear.

Bear:  It's so great to have all my friends here.  Dancing in my Big Blue House.  But there's another special friend of mine we haven't seen yet.  She's kind of hard to find.  Do you know who that is?

Cast Member (to audience):  Do you know who Bear is talking about?

Bear: That's right!  It's Shadow!  Let's sing her song together.  Ready?  (Sings.)  Oh where oh where oh where is Shadow?  Where or where or where is Shadow?  Where oh where oh where is Shadow?  Where can Shadow be?  Shadow!  C'mon you guys!   Sing with me.  Shadow!

(Shadow appears above the house by the roof.)

Shadow:  Hello there, you big old bear.

Bear:  Hello Shadow.  So nice to see you today.  So what have you been doing?

Shadow:  I've been dancing a jig with the light in the attic.  Oh my darling do I feel grand.

Bear:  Well, dancing will do that to you.

Shadow: Oh yeah!

Bear:  Shadow, I was wondering.  Would you tell us a story?

Shadow:  Oh I'd be glad to Bear.  Let me see what I can fancy.  Just watch.
(Shadow vanishes and a shadow of a bear appears as Shadow sings.)
Teddy bear, Teddy bear dance on your toes.

Teddy Bear Shadow:  Um, I'm a little new at this.

Shadow:  Teddy bear, Teddy bear touch your nose.

Teddy Bear Shadow:  Like this?  Like this?  Like this?

Shadow:  Teddy bear, Teddy bear show us your shoes.

Teddy Bear Shadow:  Here's my shoe.  See it?  See my shoe?  Here it is.

Shadow:  Teddy bear, Teddy bear that will do.

Teddy Bear Shadow:  Oh ok.  Don't wanna see it again?

Shadow:  Now Teddy bear, Teddy bear turn off the light.

Teddy Bear Shadow:  Ok.

Shadow:  Teddy bear, teddy bear say goodnight.

Teddy Bear Shadow:  Goodnight.

Bear: Wow, what a great song.  Teddy bear, Teddy bear.  You gotta like a song about bears that can dance.

Shadow:  Well, from what I've seen, you bears have dancing in your bones!

Bear:  Yes we do, yes we do.

Shadow:  Well I've got to be going Bear, but when you need another story, just try and catch me!  Bye Bear!

Bear:  Bye Shadow!  Thank you!  So you see, everyone can dance.  Anytime they want to.

Pip/Pop/Treelo:  Did somebody say dance?

Tutter:  I just love to dance!  Just love it, love it, love it!

Bear:  I know what you mean.  Everybody has dancing in them. Hey, I'd like to see your favorite way of dancing.

(The Cast Member brings up some children from the audience to dance.)

Tutter:  Yeah, go for it!  Show us your stuff!

Bear (sings):  I move my head to the left, and then to the right.  Watch us start dancing it's dynamite.  It's a great way to work up your appetite.  You can do it every morning you can do it every single night.  It feels so good to be dancing any old kind of way.  And I say that I would rather be dancing.

Tutter:  Me too!

Bear:  Dancing the day away.  It feels so great to be dancing, any old time of day.

Pip and Pop:  We're dancing!  We're dancing!  We're dancing!

Bear:  You're gonna find me dancing, dancing the day away.  Your gonna find me dancing, dancing, dancing the day away.

Bear (to the audience members):  You guys were just great!  For a second there, I thought you were bears.

Cast Member:  Coming from him, that's some compliment.  Thanks Bear!

Tutter:  Gee Bear, this has been the best time ever…best ever.

(They all comment in agreement.)

Bear: Gee, friends like you are always welcome.  Any time.  The door is always open. Hey, would you like to see one more special friend?  My old friend Luna?  Look!  There she is!  Hello, Luna.

(Luna appears at the top of the house where Shadow previously appeared.)

Luna:  Hello, Bear.  So Bear, how was your day in the Big Blue House?

Bear:  Oh Luna, it was great!  I made a lot of new friends.

Luna:  My goodness, just look at all the people!  You are one lucky bear to have so many good friends.

Bear:  Yeah, I sure am.  We had so much fun and we danced a lot too.

Luna:  Well, when you're around friends you can really relax, can't you?

Bear:  Yeah, we sure can.  Hey, Luna?  Before we go, can we sing the goodbye song?

Luna:  I would love to Bear.

Bear:  Hey this was really fun.

Luna:  We hope you liked it too.

Bear:  Seems like we've just begun.

Both:  When suddenly we're through.

Bear:  Goodbye, goodbye, good friends goodbye.

Both:  `Cause now it's time to go.

Bear:  But hey, I say, well that's ok.

Luna: `Cause we'll see you very soon, I know.

Bear:  Very soon I know.

Both: Goodbye, goodbye, good friends goodbye.

Bear:  And tomorrow, just like today.

Both:  The moon, the bear and the Big Blue House.  Will be waiting for you to come and play.  To come and play.  To come and play.

Bear:  Bye now!  It sure is fun to make new friends.  I must be the luckiest bear in the world!  Oh, and I almost forgot.  Anytime you want to play again,  you know where to find me.  I'll be in the Big Blue House.

All:  Goodbye, goodbye, good friends goodbye. And tomorrow, just like today.  The moon, the bear and the Big Blue House.  Will be waiting for you to come and play.  To come and play.  To come and play.  Bye now!
